When a designer has contributed to big labels such as Paul Smith, Levi’s and Burberry, done a great deal of archival research and travelled enough to create a solid network of craftsmen and producers, you get a unique line like UK based Garbstore. What sets Ian Paley’s designs apart from other workwear inspired brands like Engineered Garments and Mountain Research, is that unlike these lines that reproduce classic American workwear, Garbstore pieces are actually made in part with deadstock materials and using vintage machinery. He also likes to stress that his designs are not reproductions, but “imagined reproductions”, using elements of the past and filling in the blanks with his imagination, while keeping conventions of the time into consideration. Product descriptions are almost pedigrees, in some cases including information on the rarity of certain items, limited to only six pieces produced in a day. The result is something Paley takes pride in calling “historically new”, and let’s face it, who wouldn’t like to own a piece of history? His latest collection is now available at the shop and online – well worth checking out. Our good friend, Billy Waxman, kindly threw on a few pieces so we could appreciate the craftsmanship proper.
