Pour marquer le lancement du Vans x RFC Prison Issue LX, le Ringleaders Football Club a organisé un tournoi à Montreal avec des clubs similaires d’à travers le monde. Les équipes ont jouées pour "La Coupe des Coupes", ou le Jeremy L. Patterson Jay Good World Cup comme c’est connu "officiellement". Mais, avec la taille et le design unique du trophée, La Coupe des Coupes est un nom beaucoup plus apte.
Le trophée a été conçu et construit du début à la fin par Dan Finklestein, propriétaire et designer chez Consult. Dan nous a raconté qu’il n’a reçu qu’une seule instruction de la part des Ringleaders : de créer quelque chose qui donnait de la compétition au Gold Cup de la CONCACAF. Les Ringleaders lui ont envoyé deux ou trois photos du Gold Cup avec un petit message :
“Le trophée est incroyable, deux gars doivent le tenir parce que c’est tellement immense… On veut quelque chose comme ça.”
Avec ça comme guide, Dan nous explique qu’il a voulu créer un trophée qui avait de quoi en commun avec les Ringleaders, en le gardant beau et simple. Il n’était pas question d’utiliser ni du bronze, du cuivre ou du laiton vu que Dan n’avait que deux semaines et demi pour créer le trophée. Il a donc choisi de travailler avec de l’acier inoxydable, qui donnerait au trophée le poids et l’esthétique nécessaire.
Après quelques sketches et des rendements 3D, Dan a fait couper au laser l’acier inoxydable. « Le gars que j’ai utilisé adore travailler sur des projets bizarre » explique-t-il, « c’était un mariage parfait ». Pendant que le haut du trophée se faisait construire, Dan s’est concentré sur la création de la base en bois ainsi que les lettres qui ornent le trophée, toutes faites dans la typographie classique des Ringleaders.
La pièce de résistance, c’est la botte qui demeure en haut du trophée, inspirée par une des personnes qui a facilité la réalisation de la collaboration Vans x RFC, Jay Good. Il y a un peu moins de deux ans, Jay c’est cassé la jambe lors d’un match des Ringleaders. Lorsque les ambulanciers sont arrivés, ils ont du couper la botte pour l’enlever. Ils ont originalement jeté la botte à la poubelle, mais les Ringleaders l’on récupérée, conscient qu’un jour, elle serait utile. Dan a envoyé la botte pour être moulu et en suite recouverte, pour y donner le look patine qui rend le trophée si reconnaissable.
Il ne restait qu’à unir les différentes pièces. L’acier inoxydable, la base en bois et la botte patine se complimentent les uns les autres, créant un magnifique trophée, pour une magnifique histoire.
To commemorate the launch of the Vans x RFC Prison Issue LX, The Ringleaders Football Club hosted a tournament in Montreal with like-minded clubs from around the world. Up for grabs was "La Coupe des Coupes", or the Jeremy L. Patterson Jay Good World Cup as it's "officially" known. La Coupe des Coupes is more appropriate though, given the trophy's massive size and unforgettable design.
The trophy was conceived, designed and constructed from start to finish my Dan Finklestein, owner and designer at Consult. Dan says he received only the slightest instruction from The Ringleaders: to make something that rivaled the CONCACAF Gold Cup. They sent him a few pictures of the massive trophy with a short message:
“The trophy is incredible, two guys have to hold it because it’s so massive… We want something like that”
From there, Dan says he tried to make the trophy "as relative to The Ringleaders as possible while keeping it beautiful and clean." Bronze, brass and copper were out of the question given the two and half week window he had to work with, so he chose to work with stainless steel, which would "give it some weight and have the metallic feature a trophy needs."
After some rough sketches and a few 3D renderings -two and a half weeks isn't a lot of time after all- Dan had the stainless steel laser cut and welded. "The guy loves doing out of the ordinary projects so it was perfect", says Dan. While the stainless steel was being cut and welded, Dan created the wood base that the trophy rests on, as well as the lettering, all in the classic Ringleaders font.
The metaphorical cherry on top, or, in this case, the literal boot on top, was inspired by one of the people who helped make the Vans x RFC collaboration happen, Jay Good. A little less than 2 years ago, Jay broke his leg during a Ringleaders game. When the paramedics arrived, they had to cut Jay’s boot to take it off. The paramedics threw the boot out originally, but the Ringleaders grabbed it out of the garbage and kept it, knowing that one day, it would be of use.
Dan sent the boot to a shop, where they cast it in resin and then plated it to give the boot the patina metallic finish that makes it so distinguishable.
All that was left to do was assemble the different parts. The stainless steel trophy, the wood base and the patina boot all fit seamlessly together. It’s fitting, then, that such an amazing trophy would have such an amazing story behind it.

Le second tournoi international du Chinatown Soccer Club aura lieu ce week-end à New York!
Samedi, le Real Madrid et l'Atletico Madrid seront à Berry Park alors que les New York Red Bulls et les Portland Timbers joueront au Red Bull Arena. En soirée, le magazine TIFO lancera sa nouvelle édition à la galerie Clemente Soto Vélez à Manhattan. Leur deuxième numéro, "Collective Identity", sera dédié à la communauté mondiale des partisans de soccer et prendra la forme d'essais, d'entrevues et d'éditoriaux. Dimanche, le Gastown Football Club (Vancouver), les Soho Warriors (Londres), le Chinatown Soccer Club (New York) et notre Ringleaders Football Club (Montréal) seront les quatre équipes internationales qui s'affronteront dans une lutte conviviale au Stanton Street Soccer Field.
Fondé en 2006, le Ringleaders Football Club de Montréal est un collectif de plus de 45 créatifs qui partagent une même passion pour le soccer. Fière de notre ville, l'équipe OTH sera à New York ce week-end pour soutenir nos joueurs lors du tournoi!
The second international Chinatown Soccer Club tournament will take place in New York City this weekend!
Saturday, the Real Madrid and the Atletico Madrid will be at Berry Park while the New York Red Bulls and the Portland Timbers will play at the Red Bull Arena. In the evening, TIFO Magazine will launch its new edition at the Clemente Soto Velez gallery in Manhattan. Their second issue, "Collective Identity", will be dedicated to the global community of soccer fans with essays, interviews and editorials. Sunday, the Gastown Football Club (Vancouver), the Soho Warriors (London), the Chinatown Soccer Club (New York City) and our Ringleaders Football Club (Montreal) will be the four international teams playing against each other in a convivial battle at the Stanton Street Soccer Field.
Established in 2006, the Ringleaders Football Club of Montreal is a collective of more than 45 creative minds sharing the same passion for soccer. Proud of our city, the OTH team will be in New York City this weekend to support our players at the tournament!

Grâce à la fraîche couche de neige tombée quelques heures avant le match, le terrain était en parfaite condition pour l’édition 2014 de la Frostbite Cup. Les Ringleaders se sont rejoints à la galerie OTH pour manger un morceau avant de se préparer pour le grand match. Après avoir enfilé leurs souliers doublés de sacs de plastique, les joueurs se sont dirigés vers le terrain du réservoir McGill. S’en est suivie une bataille rangée entre les deux camps, mais aussi contre les éléments. L’équipe des bleus l’a finalement emporté 3-1.
With a fresh dump of snow hours before kickoff, the pitch was in perfect shape for this year's Frostbite Cup. The Ringleaders met up at the OTH gallery space for a quick bite then prepared for the big match. After lacing up their boots lined with plastic bags, the players made their way up to the McGill reservoir field. What followed was a battle between two teams, but also against the elements. The Blue team finished victorious with a score of 3-1.
