Los Angeles based artist Cleon Peterson creates tableaux of violence that inspire feelings of anxiety within the viewer. His choice of colour and form both contribute to this effect. Building scenes that feature many different subjects and actions, he hopes to engage viewers and have them move from one point of interest to another within the work, stirring up some kind of emotional reaction.

Obey chose to involve Peterson in their artist series for Holiday 2013. Excited to be amongst artists he respects such as Keith Haring and Martha Cooper, he appreciates the clothing company’s support and sees the result as wearable art, where each piece represents something different.

For Holiday 2013, we worked with Cleon Peterson for our artist series. In the video we speak with Cleon about his fine art and career in design. About the Artist: In his anxiety-riddled world, violence is the status quo. His dystopian scenes evoke Thomas Hobbes’ description of life as war between individuals: “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short. Deviance is simply the norm, and the displaced individual is forced to navigate this wicked world alone, finding hollow bits of pleasure and meaning in violence, sex, religion and drugs. Peterson describes his bedlam as “a gray world where law breakers and law enforcers are one in the same; a world where ethics have been abandoned in favor of personal entitlement.” To learn more visit www.cleonpeterson.com
