For the sixth edition of our Chez Nous Mix Session series, we turned to M.BOOTYSPOON. You can check out a short Q&A with him below before hitting the play button at the bottom of the page. You'll be treated to a nice mix that you can listen to as we ride out summer together!
OTH: When did you first get into DJing and making music, and why?
M.B: I was exposed to underground electronic music at a very young age and that passion never really died down. I guess I gained the proper interest for DJing from my older brother when I was about fifteen. He was starting out playing minimal & techno records after he had gone out and seen most of Montreal's underground nightlife scene for himself. We had a pair of Technics in our basement, but I couldn't scratch so I immediately (and regrettably) dropped trying to DJ for about four years. Around this time I had also taken stabs at sound design and tried making my own music, but it was mainly at a hobbyist stage. It was around early 2009 when I really started burning CDs taking them to bars and clubs to play.
Within the last couple of months I’ve taken production a bit more seriously and I’m happy to announce that you’ll see a release from me in the fall under a not-so-obvious alias. Very unintentional ten-year plan I guess hahahah
OTH: Do you have any residencies in Montreal? Radio shows? etc...
M.B: Not at the moment. I can pretty much be found playing anywhere in the city really. I’ve had an on-going project which is New Sounds of Montreal that started with Sinjin Hawke, LOL Boys’ Heartbeat(s) and Rinse France’s Azamat B. which is where I cut my teeth at DJing a varied selection of music and VJing at parties. I also just started up 00:AM with three friends of mine which is a party focused on House & Techno talents who push the envelope of those genres. Brendan Neal aka Motions is the other resident DJ of that night.
OTH: Any particular events that have stuck with you in Montreal?
M.B: I still really like Night Trackin' which was Jacques Greene and Seb Diamond's nights back in 2009 till about 2012. The early parties they had put on had a huge impact on me because it was about a year after I had really started going out and it definitely stuck with me during that formative period. That was also around the time that I saw Tiga play at Stereo for the first time which changed how I viewed nightlife, partying etc. Also when the Torn Curtain had it's doors open to after hours party people, that was really something else- definitely a pivotal point in Montreal's late night scene for the decade. After parties in this city have, in absolutely no way, come close to this vibe since.
OTH: How do you describe your genre and your vibe?
M.B:I've definitely gravitated to a Chicago / Ron Hardy style of DJing. I'm not a genre purist. If I can break down rhythmic or tonal elements between musics that on the surface seem completely different just because they’re from a different scene, I don't see why they shouldn't be played together. I'm all for having a cohesive, disciplined set every once in a while but I also don't enjoy sounding and playing like most people these days do. I’ve found that it’s this sort of approach that sets the mood and pace of my DJing apart from others.
OTH: How would you describe this mix?
M.B: I noticed there were already a lot of DJ mixes aimed towards the dancefloor for Chez Nous series, so I figured I'd present something a little different. I came at this mix with little constraints other than the period in which it was being released, the back to school period of the year; end-of-summer vibes were channeled into it. It's still going to be hot out, you're still going to be in summer mode for another month, but the comedown is near and I wanted to soothe people into that. The kinda mix you can listen to by the pool, while you're shopping or before going on a night out in the city. Personally this summer had been an upward rollercoaster going full speed whilst money flew out my pockets, and I don’t quite think I was alone on that ride. Not trying to imagine slamming the breaks on that.
On vous présente la cinquième édition de notre série Chez Nous Mix Sessions, créée par le DJ montréalais Forrest. Que vous soyez à un barbecue, ou en train de vous préparez pour une soirée sur les terrasses de notre merveilleuse ville, le mix de Forrest a exactement ce qu'il vous faut.
Impliqué dans la musique depuis son enfance, Forrest a eu ses débuts en tant que frontman de divers groupes avant de faire la transition à la musique électronique. Depuis, il utilise un mélange unique pour se différencier des autres actes sur la scène, en combinant son historique de frontman avec sa passion pour le techno. Au global il décrit son style comme étant entre le house et le techno, mais c'est son utilisation de sa voix qui créé un style unique.
C'est ce style qui lui a permis de prendre une résidence mensuelle chez Datcha, et qui lui a offert la chance de performer chez Piknic Électronik et Igloofest. "C'est les meilleurs gigs pour moi," explique-t-il, "j'ai la chance de performer devant des grosses foules montréalaises qui adorent la musique techno." Avec cette énergie montréalaise en tête, Forrest travaille pour bâtir quelque chose de stable sur la scène, pour pouvoirs toujours jouer devant des foules énergétiques.
Pour ce qui est de ce mix, Forrest a inclu plusieurs de ses nouvelles chansons, qui sont sorties sur des labels tels que 2020Vision, Get Physical, et Moon Harbour. "C'est bon pour les clubs, mais tu peux vraiment écouter le mix partout et à chaque occasion." For the fifth edition of our Chez Nous Mix Session series, we've tapped Montreal DJ/producer Forrest to create a mix that's perfect for any occasion as we move along towards the end of summer. So whether you're hanging out at a barbecue, or getting ready to hit our city's wonderful terrasses, Forrest's Mix Session has you covered.
Entrenched in music since he was a kid, Forrest started off playing in bands before he made the transition to electronic music. Since then, he's brought a unique blend to the table - one that blends his background as a frontman with his love for techno. While on the whole he describes his genre as something falling between house and techno, the vocal aspect is what sets him apart. It's hard to find other DJs who sing on their original tracks, while also performing them live during sets.
This trademark sound has allowed him to hold down a monthly gig at Datcha, as well as slots at Piknic Électronik and Igloofest. "Those are the best for me," he explains, "I get to perform in front of big Montréal crowds that are fully receptive to electronic music." With that contagious energy in mind, Forrest is trying to build something more permanent within the Montreal electronic scene, allowing him to consistently play in front of energetic, techno-loving crowds.
As for this mix, Forrest has included a number of his latest releases, out on labels such as 2020Vision, Get Physical, and Moon Harbour. L'été est officiellement arrivé à Montréal et pour célébrer, on vous présente le plus récent Chez Nous Mix Session! Cette fois ci, nous avons demandé à Truspin de créer un mix pour commencer l'été du bon pied.
Un vétéran de la scène montréalaise, Truspin a grandi sur la music hip-hop et house et a commencé à tenir des soirées lorsqu'il était encore étudiant au CEGEP. De là, il s'est taillé une place en tant que DJ sur la scène montréalaise et s'est retrouvé avec un nombre grandissant de concerts et de soirées. De ces jours-ci, vous pouvez le trouver chez Mme Lee, Apt. 200, ou Tokyo Bar, entre autres. De plus, Truspin est connu pour les deux fêtes INCROYABLES qu'il tient à chaque année en collaboration avec Tokyo Bar, Monster Energy, et Tiger Distribution.
En tant que DJ, Truspin reconnait que son plus grand défi est de créer une atmosphère pour les gens. "J'aime ça jouer un peu de tout," explique-t-il, "dans le fond, j'aime vraiment tout ce qui a un peu de soul." Pour ce qui est de ce mix, vous pouvez vous attendre à un son relaxe et idéal pour l'été avec quelques nouveautés que Truspin aime particulièrement en ce moment. Summer officially hit Montreal yesterday and we're starting it off on the right foot with the latest edition of our Chez Nous Mix Sessions series. This time around, we tapped Truspin to create a mix for your listening pleasure.
A veteran of Montreal's nightlife scene, Truspin grew up on hip-hop and house music and started throwing parties as a CEGEP student. From there, he made a name for himself and started getting different gigs across the city. Today, you can find him spinning at Mme Lee, Apt. 200, and Tokyo Bar, among others. What's more, Truspin has made a name for himself by throwing two HUGE rooftop parties every year in collaboration with the good folks at Tokyo Bar, Monster Energy, and Tiger Distribution.
As a club DJ, Truspin realizes that his challenge is to get people to move and create a vibe that's fun for his listeners. "I like to incorporate a lot of different styles of music in my sets," he explains, "I like anything that's soulful, really." As for this mix, you can expected something with a fun, relaxed summer vibe, complete with a few new tracks that Truspin is digging of late. Pour la troisième édition de notre série Chez Nous Mix Session, on s'est tourné vers Francis di Stasio de Turbo Recordings, aussi connu sous le nom Deejay Ledisko. Gérant de label chez Turbo, Francis est responsable du bureau montréalais, ainsi que de trouver de la nouvelle musique et de s'assurer que cette musique soit entendu par le plus de monde possible. Au delà de ses responsabilités chez Turbo, Ledisko joue régulièrement chez Datcha, ainsi que chez Neon et Stereobar. Il nous a aussi chuchoté qu'il travaillait sur une collaboration avec Newspeak, un nouveau arrivé sur la scène montréalaise.
Un fanatique de la musique depuis un jeune âge, Francis a commencé dans le monde du DJ il y a un peu plus de 6 ans. Il s'est vite trouvé au sein de la scène électro à Montréal et créait des mix afin convaincre des DJs de lui laisser ouvrir des spectacles. "Au début, j'étais horrible," explique-t-il, "mais je me suis tellement amusé qu'il fallait absolument que je joue encore." Depuis, il a mis de l'effort pour perfectionner son art et a récemment commencé à se concentrer sur sa musique originale avec son partenaire Ponsolo.
Il avoue ne pas avoir un genre en particulier qui défini sa musique. Plutôt, s'est une "balance entre la musique aggressive et un son groovy" qu'il veut frapper. Pour Francis, le défi c'est de toujours jouer de la musique qui va plaire à la foule, tout en leur offrant un son qu'ils n'ont pas encore entendu. For the third edition of our Chez Nous Mix Session series, we've turned to Francis di Stasio, aka Deejay Ledisko, of Turbo Recordings. Label Manager of Turbo, Deejay Ledisko holds down the fort at the label's Montreal office and is responsible for finding new music, getting that music to the masses, and making sure that the label gains exposure. In addition to his duties at Turbo, Ledisko regularly holds down the fort at Datcha, Neon and Stereobar. He also hints that he's working on a collaboration with newly-minted nightlife spot Newspeak.
An avid music collector, Francis first started spinning a little over 6 years ago. He became fully immersed in the electro nightlife scene in Montreal, and soon found himself peddling mixtapes to DJs and lobbying them for opening slots at their shows. "When I first started I was technically horrendous", he explains, "but I had so much fun that I had to do it again." Since then he's refined his craft and has recently become serious about creating original music with his partner in crime, Ponsolo.
As far as his sound is concerned, he admits that he doesn't limit himself to a particular genre or style. Instead, he tries to work a balance between "more banging, aggressive sounding music and groovier, deeper music". For him, the biggest challenge is being entertaining while still providing new experiences for listeners. His hour-long mix will certainly leave you wanting more. Le mix d'une heure offre une belle ambiance pour la transition au printemps, et nous aidera a faire fondre la neige qui nous entour. Que vous l'écoutez en tranquillité chez vous, ou en vous préparant pour sortir le week-end, le mix atteint la balance parfaite de rythme et d'ambiance relaxe.
Le fondateur et l'animateur de Voyage Funktastique, qui inclu une émission radio hebdomadaire et une soirée mensuelle, Walla P amène les gens dans son univers, et offre un peu de fraicheur sur la scène musicale. Le talentueux DJ montréalais se tourne vers le Funk pour s'exprimer vu la "positivité, le respect, et le sentiment d'entre-aide du Funk, ce qui créé un atmosphère de communauté dans ce genre. On est comme une grande famille." L'atmosphère de positivité et de communauté se vera transporté en Europe lors de la tournée européenne de Walla P.

We're shaking off the last of winter with Chez Nous Mix Session #02, featuring the funky Walla P on the 1s and 2s. The hour-long mix offers some upbeat vibes that will help us transition to spring as the snow around us melts away. Whether you're lounging around your place, or getting ready to go out on the weekend, the mix offers the right balance of uptempo beats and laid back vibes.
The host and founder of Voyage Funktastique, which includes a weekly radio show and a monthly night, Walla P takes listeners on a journey into his world, offering them a breath of fresh air compared to what they normally hear on the radio. For the talented Montrealer, the beauty of Funk is that it gives off an aura of "positivity, respect, and community that makes Funk, as a genre, kind of like a big family." He's hoping to continue to spread that positivity with an upcoming European tour.

Music has always been a very important part of OTH's DNA; as such, we are very excited to unveil our latest project, the "Chez Nous Mix Sessions". We have invited a number of taste-making Montreal DJs to get behind the turntables and showcase their personal taste in music.
We turned to Hatchmatik for Mix Session #01 and he certainly did not disappoint, laying down an hour-long house mix that's perfect to listen to on a morning commute, a lazy weekend, or at the shop.
